PRP Therapy

What's PRP Therapy?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) Therapy is an exciting in-office procedure as it allows doctors to inject PRP into an injured area while stimulating our own bodies’ ability to heal itself. With PRP therapy, doctors can harvest PRP from a patient’s own blood. After separated in a centrifuge, this plasma is injected back into a patient’s affected area to encourage faster healing. PRP has a great concentration of growth factors that can help the body repair itself in a targeted area and help minimize pain.

How PRP Works

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is human blood that is separated using a centrifuge to isolate the platelets from the blood cells. Our body’s blood is made of a combination of 93% red blood cells, 6% white blood cells, and 1% plasma and platelets. Platelets are our bodies’ defense that contributes to our natural healing processes. The body’s first response to tissue injury is to deliver platelets to the injured area. The main contribution of these cells is their clotting ability, however, they also provide an incredible healing factor for muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints naturally. By using PRP therapy, we use concentrated amounts of the healing platelets and deliver them to parts of the body that need accelerated healing. The platelets start the healing process as they work to attract stem cells to the place of injury. As we use PRP therapy, we are able to inject these natural healing platelets into tendons, muscles, ligaments, and joints by locating the exact location of the injury. PRP therapy provides an outpatient treatment that is convenient, time-efficient, and effective. With minimal downtime and quick treatments, many patients continue back into their normal lives with little to no recovery time. The number of injections varies depending on each patient’s individualized condition but typically ranges anywhere from two to six injections spaced out over time. Patients typically experience a significant reduction in pain after the first or second injection.
